Author Guidelines


Manuscript preparation:

Our initial guidance here has been adapted from the International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, Higher Education, Teaching in Higher Education, Studies in higher Education, the Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education and the APA style guidelines.

  • Double-spaced text.
  • 12-point standard font (e.g. Times New Roman, Calibri, Arial)
  • Italics or bold can be used for emphasis instead of underlining.
  • Abbreviations should be defined at first mention and used consistently thereafter.
  • Page numbers in upper right corner of page header. Line-numbering should be used.
  • Section headers as needed, with a maximum of three levels of headings.
  • Use table function, instead of spreadsheets to make tables.
  • Include relevant information in the body of the text, instead of footnotes or endnotes.
  • Save file in docx format (Windows 2007 or higher) or doc format (older Windows version)
  • Submit a single document that includes the abstract, images and references. You will also be asked to submit your abstract and references again separately during the submission process.

Tables, figures and art work:

All figures and tables should be supplied within the document, on a separate page at the appropriate place, numbered sequentially and include descriptive titles. Any previously published material should be identified in the form of a reference at the end of the caption. Ensure that any text within the figure is legible at final size. You must obtain permission from the copyright owner for figures or images that have been published elsewhere.

References:

Only works that have been published, or are accepted for publication, and have been cited in the manuscript should be included in the reference list. Personal communications should only be cited in the manuscript. Manuscripts should follow the APA (author/date) guidelines for citations and referencing. Ensure that where available a digital object identifier (DOI) is used, and is correct.

Accessability:

All figures should have descriptive captions so that visually impaired users can use a text-to-speech or text-to-Braille software. Patterns should be used instead of or in addition to colour for conveying information for colour blind readers. For more information please see the Web Content Accerssibility Guidelines.

Supplementary material:

We encourage the submission of supplementary material, for example animations, videos, audio. The supplementary material should be cited within the manuscript as "Online Resource 1, 2, 3…".

 

Types of manuscript

Reports and articles

Title: manuscript title only. Author's names or information should not be included at this stage, and should be given separately through the  submission process. 

Abstract: 100-200 word abstract summarising the manuscript for the reader.

Keywords: Include 3-5 keywords that can be used to index the manuscript.

Acknowledgements: Include brief acknowledgements of people, institutions or funding bodies, with names of organisations written in full.

Body of manuscript should include introduction, methods, results, discussion, references.


Case studies:

1000-2000 words length, including an abstract of up to 200 words. A method of sharing interesting and innovative practices, these pieces can be a description of supported by evaluative evidence or research that use a case study as a method. The case studies can focus on any aspect of Higher Education experience, from learning and teaching, assessment and feedback, and engaging and supporting learners.  

 

Opinion pieces, brief position papers, critical reflections on current HE practice and/or policy:

1000-2000 words length. Scholarly insights regarding HE practice and policy, including critical responses to changes and developments in the sector and/or more speculative pieces exploring and proposing alternatives.

Responses to previous journal content can also include letters, provided these are also clearly  grounded in relevant scholarship.

 

Creative writing:

Varied length. Poems, artworks, cartoons, fiction, creative non-fiction, short stories or other creative artefacts reflecting opinions, issues and experience of contemporary higher education.

For example, Philip Emery's non-fictional creative article on the teaching of creative writing.

 

Reviews and commentaries:

1000 word length. Evaluative, but with a short description of the book, approach or tool (including explanations for unfamiliar readers), its intended audience, and its implications for higher education learning and teaching. In addition, it should also include an evaluation of the strengths and limitations of the publication, approach, or tool, with supportive citations or evidence.

 

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  3. Where available, URLs and Digital Object Identifiers (DOI)s for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed on separate pages within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end. Line numbering has been used.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. The instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

    NOTE: please do not include your author names in the manuscript, you will be able to submit them separately.
